In September of 2025, Artreach members and staff had the great good fortune of working with guest artists Coco Olakunle and Mona Penn-Jousset in a week-long photography workshop culminating in a photography exhibit. This exploration of light, color, and the soul of a photograph was a deeply touching experience that allowed for participants to connect with each other as we shared what matters to each of us. While presented as a "photography workshop series," the impact was far deeper. We learned about the ethics of getting to know the subject of your photograph; of understanding their culture and values; and of capturing a photograph that shares more about the person than simply what you can see with your eyes.
The photography exhibit is the result of photos taken by workshop participants who had pondered these questions:
What do you care about?
What do you want to share with the world?
How deep are you willing to go to do this?
With those questions in mind, students went on "photo field trips" to capture images that spoke to these questions. Each participant was allowed three photographs for critique, with an opportunity to replace one or more of the photos for the exhibit. From now until end of December 2025, the photos will be hanging in the Artreach gallery - 3 images per participant, with a title that reveals the connecting theme.
Call to arrange for a visit if you'd like to see the exhibit. We'd love to show you Artreach's gallery! 860-887-0014, leave us a message and we will call you back. Or use the "contact us" form on this website.
